Hollard Equine Direct is right for you, if:

The Routine Care Cover benefit is included in your monthly premium and may be utilised towards any of the following preventative treatments, if rendered and provided by a registered Vet:

  • Annual Vaccination
  • Deworming
  • Tick and Flea Control
  • Dental Corrections

Requirements: When you apply for horse insurance you will be asked to sign or agree a declaration confirming that you have disclosed any information that may affect the application. This includes information on your horse’s state of health and previous veterinary history.

  • Waiting Period: One calendar month from start date for Accidental Injury and Routine Care. Two calendar months from start date for Illness.
  • Join date will always be the 1st of a month.
  • Horses must be between the ages of 6 months and 15 years old to join.
  • Once on cover your horse is covered for life providing your premiums are kept up to date.
  • Claims are paid according to the Hollard Equine Direct Tariff Rate. This internal tariff of fees is based on usual and customary Veterinary charges and is reviewed annually.
  • There is an excess deductible percentage with a minimal value per claim (refer Benefits and Premium Schedule).
  • There is no excess deductible on Routine Care claims.
  • A policy year is the 12-month period between the anniversaries of the horse’s start date.
  • Benefits renew on the anniversary of the horse’s start date.
  • Annual refers to the 12-month period between the anniversaries of the horse’s start date.

Veterinary Certificates: Veterinary Certificates not older than 6 months are required for this cover at the inception of the policy.

  • Benefits are reimbursed according to the Hollard Equine Direct Tariff Rate, which was based on usual and customary Veterinary charges and is reviewed annually.
  • All our policies start on the 1st day of the month. We do not pro-rate.
  • Any new application received before the 6th of the month will start on the 1st of that month. Any application received after the 5th of the month will start on the 1st of the following month.
  • There is one calendar month's waiting period from your policy's start date for Accidental Injury and Routine Care, and two calendar months waiting period for Illness.
  • There is a 14 day money back guarantee.
  • A one calendar month written notice is required on cancellation of policy.
  • Monthly premiums and benefits for Hollard Equine Direct are adjusted on 1st March every year.

Do you have any other Hollard Equine Direct products?
We only have the one product at present which covers illness, accidental injury and preventative treatment.
What benefits does Hollard Equine Direct offer?
It covers veterinary treatments and surgeries for accidental injury and illnesses ranging from minor problems to major conditions such as broken bones, joint diseases, lameness, ENT conditions and biliary. We also provide cover towards preventative treatment such as vaccinations, deworming and dental correction.
How does Hollard Equine Direct work?
Once your Vet has treated your horse, simply send in the Hollard Equine Direct Claim Form along with your Vet’s receipted detailed account. PetSure then calculates the benefit and sends payment directly to you. It is as simple as that.
What is not covered?
Like most insurance policies, Hollard Equine Direct does have some exclusions to help keep your premiums low. These include, but are not limited to: Breeding, obstetrics, foaling or conditions relating to or resulting from breeding; Congenital or Hereditary defects or diseases, or conditions directly caused by such defects and diseases; examinations, vaccinations or treatments you choose to have carried out that is not covered under Routine Care and not directly related to a covered Illness or Accidental Injury.
Can my horse visit any Vet I choose?
Yes, you can use any Vet who is licensed to practice in South Africa.
Are there any age limits for the insurance?
From 6 months to a maximum of 15 years as at inception of the policy. Once on cover your horse is covered for life providing your premiums are kept up to date.
When will my policy start?
Your policy will commence as at the 1st of the month following your approved application.
Benefits will commence as follows:
  • Accidental Injury – One calendar month from horse’s policy start date
  • Illness – Two calendar months from horse’s policy start date
  • Routine Care – One calendar month from horse’s policy start date

Does Hollard Equine Direct offer benefits towards preventative treatment?
Yes, we recommend and encourage annual vaccinations etc. A contribution towards these benefits is included in the Routine Care cover.
What if I change my mind after signing up with Hollard Equine Direct?
You have a 14 day money back guarantee period from the start date of your policy to review and cancel with no obligation. If you would like to cancel your policy after this period we require one calendar month’s written notice to cancel.

Making a Claim

Follow the easy steps below to get your claim processed fast and efficiently:

1. Pay your bill:

Make this payment directly to the Vet who treated your horse.

2. Submit your claim:

Complete the Hollard Equine Direct Claim Form and submit this, together with the Itemised Vet Invoice and Receipt, within 60 days of the date the expenses were incurred, using:

  • Please ensure that the FULL diagnosis is written clearly on the Claim Form and/or on the Vet Invoice.
  • Please ensure the Claim Form is fully completed, stamped by your attending Vet and signed by yourself and the attending Vet.   
  • Incomplete Claim Forms will be returned to you and this will result in delays in processing your claim.
  • Please ensure that your current details on the Claim Form are completed in full including your email address for communication purposes.


  • You have completed the Hollard Equine Direct Claim Form
  • You have attached the original itemised invoice and receipts
  • You and your Vet have signed the Hollard Equine Direct Claim Form
  • The Diagnosis is clearly visible
  • The Hollard Equine Direct Claim Form has been stamped by the attending Vet with the veterinary practice stamp

What We Will Do

  • We will deal directly with you regarding settlement of the claim.
  • We will reimburse you, not the Vet.
  • If the claim resulted from the wrongful actions of a third party, upon payment of benefits, we will exercise our rights of subrogation in respect of recovery action against that party. This may entail legal proceedings being issued in your name.
  • We will process claims daily to provide the best possible service.
  • Claims payments are done every two weeks. We will send you a letter regarding the settlement of your claim and that letter will provide details of how your claim has been dealt with.
